I’m an English teacher, I should know better, but I love it when my kids consistently mispronounce words. I find it cute and I don’t correct them. I’m just hoping they’ll figure it out eventually. Wrigglebot will want to do something ‘… all my byself’ instead of ‘all by myself’ they will watch ‘Ratatootie’ instead of ‘Ratatouille’ and Squirm puts ‘hair tyres’ into her hair.

Maybe I’m just trying to keep them young. Wrigglebot fell asleep on my lap the other day and I couldn’t help but thinking that it could be for the last time. I think I need to be strong, however, Husband still mispronounces words that he learnt as a child, ‘decipher’ for him is ‘de-ki-fer’, cute when you are under 5 not so when you are over 30.

We’ve had school holidays here and though none of mine are in school it does mean no kinder, no playgroup and no work for their grandmother. I’ve had a little holiday at home with the kids having a holiday with their grandparents. As soon as the kids left I went a little crazy pulling things out of cupboards and cleaning and sorting and vacuuming. It was as if as I had to get as much done as I could while I didn’t have little people calling me every two minutes. I was on warp speed and then by dinner on the second day I was done. I crashed and pulled out a book and then another. I read till two in the morning slept in and then read in bed before getting out at eleven and reading some more. In 24 hrs I read 900 pages, something I haven’t done in ages.

Tonight the kids came home, I gave them kisses and tucked them into bed. I read a little more and then quietly snuck into their room and stood there; listening to them breathe and watching them sleep. Having kids made me look forward to cleaning, something I never thought would be possible and not having them around made me realise how bland life is without them.

I think I place too much faith in Play School as my time to get everything done. I rely on that time to: have a shower, clean the kitchen, have breakfast, put a load of washing on and do some exercise. It is a nice ideal but Play School only goes for half an hour and so I’m always left with things undone.

Even for half an hour though I love the challenge, the contest to race and get as much done as possible. Little Ted and I are in partnership, he sings and I clean.

I seem to slack off in winter and don’t go to the park so much, or go outside scootering, the kids feel cooped up and that makes us all a bit miserable. So… I just told off Wrigglebot for whinging so now I’m going to say what I like about winter… um… hot chocolate pudding.

There are some times when I am absolutely surprised by my kids and overwhelmed with pride. One such occasion was on Friday when I was driving and got a flat tyre. I was far from home and had the three kids with me. I have never changed a tyre and I must admit that my first thought was not, ‘I wish I had bothered to learn how to change a tyre,’ no, my first thought was, ‘I really should have bothered to wear a short skirt and high heels today, then somebody would help me.’ As it was I was in jeans and moccasins pulling all of our luggage out of the boot onto the side of the road in an effort to get to the spare. It was starting to get dark and I was starting to freak out just a little.

In stepped Wrigglebot. ‘It’s okay Mum, don’t worry. I know how to change a tyre.’ And then he was off, getting the jack and all sorts of things that I don’t even know the names of and telling me what to do. He took off the nuts, once I had loosened them, and talked me through everything. Apparently he has changed tyres with Husband. And so I learnt an important lesson that day, not how to change a tyre but either to always look good or have Wrigglebot in the car with me.

I thought I would be better than my kids at most things for a long time. It seems like that long time is actually just four and a half years. Wrigglebot started off on a three wheel scooter before progressing to his two wheel one and he is obsessed with it. It goes on holidays with us and he goes out and rides it in the court just about every day so maybe it was a bit naive of me to think that age would be an advantage in this case.

He turned to me and said, ‘I’ll show you some easy tricks that you can do Mummy.’ I was a little insulted, I’m not going to lie, I was pretty sure I could take him. He showed me some tricks and then handed the scooter over to me. I tried and fell, I tried again and failed once again. He can out-scooter me and it took me a long time till I could actually say those words. My son is better on his scooter than I am. But amazingly enough I’m still better than him at cleaning his room, making his lunch, getting his drinks and getting his clothes out. Funnily enough those are the things that I wouldn’t mind if he was better than me at. Some mothers would give up at this point but not me. When Wrigglebot has his afternoon rest I’m going to practise on his scooter because maybe just maybe I can recover and still be the Mum who can do everything in the eyes of her children. We will see.

We’ve all been sick for the past week, well except for The Little One who has a cast iron stomach courtesy of whatever foodlike substance he can find on the ground. Before we got sick I was marvelling that there has only been one occasion when I have been so sick that I haven’t been able to look after the kids. And then Husband and I both got sick on the same day. It was awful. I just wanted to sleep instead I was reading books to them, watching them ride and wiping noses. Husband tried to help but boys just aren’t good at being sick. When Husband vomits the whole house knows about it, as well as the neighbours. I don’t vomit. Squirm got sick at 4am, it’s always at 4am, she seemed to cough, vomitted all over her bed and went back to sleep on it and was fine the next day. Two nights later Wrigglebot got sick, again at 4am, and screamed hysterically for five minutes. The following day he did nothing but needed to be touching me at all times. All I’m saying is that if my family were an appropriate sample size to draw conclusions from, then there is definitely a difference in the way the genders deal with sickness.

Apologies once again, I’ve been super busy but I’ve just finished my textbook so I should have time to catch up with all of you much more often now. So we went to the beach house for the long weekend and had a beautiful time, we went to the park lots, Wrigglebot caught a bunch of fish, Husband got lots of surfing in and I, well, I’m a little proud to admit this, I surfed. I caught waves and got onto my feet. How long I was on my feet for is irrelevant. I surfed. I’m not twenty anymore, I have three kids, I have a bit of a belly, I’m definitely not what people think about when they talk about surfer chicks, but I did it, I surfed.

I grew up waterski-ing and snow ski-ing so I’m quite used to extreme sports, they don’t really seem extreme to me they have always just been normal, but it was fun this weekend to learn something new. It’s not as easy as it was when you were seven. This all got me to realise that I want my kids to have the opportunity to do extreme sport regularly. I think it teaches you that its okay to fall, that its hard to learn something new, to confront challenges, to enjoy being outdoors, it gives you self-confidence that you can do something that most people can’t and mostly, they’re fun sports without competition, unless you turn professional. So I guess that’s what we’re doing for most of our holidays now, all I have to do is bleach my hair blonde, get a nose ring, a tan and a pair of Australian flag bikinis.
