What a team.

Lately I have had mixed opinions regarding a four month old’s ability to understand the outside world. I am aware of her ability to manipulate me (into singing at the top of my lungs about ‘mashed banana’ and ‘cold spaghetti’) and her dad (into pull faces only a mother could love) but I mean the capacity to see what she wants and work her little mind around a plan in order to get it.
My health nurse seems to think that babies can only ‘feel’ not ‘think’. So she is a firm believer that Milla can’t possibly devise a plan of attack just yet. She also believes that a baby of this age has very limited capacity to understand her outside world.
I gotta say, after what happened at mother’s group last week, I’m not so sure about this…here’s what happened…
Last week was the first time in a month we had all met as many of us were away with Christmas and busy with what comes with a festive season. It was amazing to see the growth and progress in development amongst the 15 babies (yes, quite a big group). I was happy to see everyone again and was glad to be out of the house.
The conversation was entertaining, until Danielle (the host) mentioned in a concerned tone the fact that Milla wasn’t rolling yet.
My reply, “No, she’s like a sack of potatoes. I think her reflux hasn’t helped her development because she doesn’t have a lot of tummy time.”
Danielle’s response, “She’s four months though, you really need to get that checked out.”
Milla’s response – projectile vomit all over Danielle’s lap!
Now, surely Milla has the capacity to understand her outside world…if not, she’s a good judge of character anyway.

  1. Ha. Don’t worry Amy, Archie’s like a sack of potatoes too and he’s not rolling. If any sticky beak your-baby-has-to-be-like-this person has an issue with it I’ll projectile vomit over them myself if I have to.

  2. LOL! I’m kinda glad Milla stuck up for herself because I’m really not sure what I would have done! Wouldn’t have been pretty. Don’t think she’ll be making too many more comments any time soon now :)
