The Granny Battle
Ahhh Christmas time…a time to give, a time to be merry, a time to be thankful for everything we have…and a time for the Battle of the Grannys?
Remember that competitive edge I spoke of in my last post? Well, I have since discovered it extends beyond the mother to the grandmother. Milla’s Nanny and Granna have done nothing but squabble in the lead up to Christmas day – all well meaning of course.
“They are coming to our place for Milla’s first Christmas” “No i’m sure they are coming to ours.”
“I bought her a Christmas bauble to hang on the tree” “Oh, you’ll have to return it. I already got one last week.”
“I have a gorgeous reindeer outfit for her to wear on the day” “I bought her a pretty dress months ago.”
I tell you, it almost got to the point where I had to intervene and put them in ‘time out’!
What is this behaviour I ask you? Were they testing me for when I have two children and have to aid in settling arguments? Is it that the maternal instinct remains forever entrenched once we have born children – and continues with our children’s children? Or, were they vying for Milla’s love and my gratitude?
Whatever the case, I had to laugh, as while this was going on Milla just sat there wide-eyed, chewing her hand, with dribble running down her front and muffled sounds coming from her nappy – completely unaware of all the silly commotion surrounding her.
