Rant of the month (sorry it isn’t much about babies).

May 18, 2007

It is not often that I have a rant (at least not online anyway) so here is your warning, this is my rant for the month.

I am sick of people complaining and always expecting more for themselves from the government. The budget recently came out and everybody pretty much got a slice of the pie and yet people were up in arms wanting more. We live in an extremely blessed country and are spoilt by our government (perhaps rightly so) when it comes to family benefits including the baby bonus, health care and the education system. Of course there are issues that can always be addressed but we have it pretty good.

In our country, with some government help, a family can live decently on one modest income. In most places in Australia you can get free medical care through Medicare without having to worry about insurance. Education is accessible and affordable for every child not to mention the higher education system which still allows students to go and pay their loans back when they are earning a significant amount and only then. We have it good, mention these things to our good friends in the USA and they are extremely jealous. The government needs to begin to do other things with our money rather than pandering to the masses with outstretched hands who will take it and then complain that it is not enough. The government needs to be looking at infrastructure, as simple as a water tank per house, and radically changing our industries so we can move forward with new technology. The government needs to make some unpopular decisions to prepare for the inevitable future.

I am glad that I live in Australia. I am glad my son will grow up in Australia. I am thankful for the support we get from the government which allows me to stay at home with my son. I worry though, I worry that one day my son will look back at the years that he grew up in and refer to them as the golden age when everyone had and everyone wanted more and everyone got and everyone was deliberately shutting their eyes to the future.
