Motherhood- The great guessing game.
Temperature is a constant struggle of mine. How do I know if Wrigglebot is warm, cold or just right? The nights have been getting cooler and I have been cold so I think that maybe Wrigglebot is cold. Husband, however, is always warm; so is Wrigglebot like me or like him? Language and communication can be such a useful skill to have, unfortunately it is one that Wrigglebot has not acquired yet and so I guess.
This all began when Wrigglebot who usually sleeps through the night started waking up again at about 4am, all he needs is his dummy and he goes straight back to sleep but still I don’t like getting up on these cold nights. And so I thought, perhaps he is cold. I piled on the blankets and so he now sleeps in a grow suit in a sleeping bag under a doona under a blanket under a light quilt. Overkill? I just don’t know.
The first night he slept well but then he woke up again last night and his little hands were freezing. I think a simple conversation could clear all of this up, ‘Were you hot or cold last night?’ ‘Hot.’ But it doesn’t quite work like that and I suppose this is the essence of what it is like to be a mother; guessing, observing, modifying and hopefully somewhere down the track you get it right.

The guessing game is what keeps life interesting!! I know it’s easy from where I’m sitting to say that but the sense of achievement comes when you can work out by the tell tale signs what the problem is, and you already do that so well with other things.
A baby doesn’t need to verbalise for a mother to know what it wants – there’s a language that is unique between mothers and babies. There are times however that it takes a little longer for the penny to drop – I hope Wrigglebot settles soon so you get the full night’s sleep you need. It’s funny because give him a year or two and you’ll wish he couldn’t talk, because you can’t stop them once they get started … the questions will drive you crazy!!!!!!
