Marketing to Mothers (because they love their babies).
When I got pregnant I was suddenly assailed with information about necessary things that I had to have to raise my child safely and with the best chance in life. And so I researched and read and talked to people and then suddenly it struck me, people have been having babies for hundreds of years. Einstein was smart without having Baby Einstein products to stimulate his senses, increase his concentration and raise his IQ.
We all want our children to be successful and so we are juicy fodder for entrepreneurs. A friend of mine mentioned that what she felt was necessary was a device that plugged into the nursery and went red when the room was hot and blue when it was cold. Another mentioned a ‘booger sucker’ (her words for what I am sure is a very technical device). Personally I don’t think that I bought anything extraneous, although I did get some ‘educational’ toys to which Wrigglebot snubs in preference of newspapers and cardboard boxes. I would also never write here that I had bought some gimmicks as husband may read this.
I guess some times I just need a good dose of sensible thinking, babies are the same as they have always been, some things are handy but not all are necessary. And each time I pick up a catalog I just marvel at the ingenuity of marketers and how gullible they think we must be when faced with a picture of a cute baby with a smile on their face.
