Consequences.

Wrigglebot loves shutting doors; sliding doors, swinging doors, front doors, security doors, it doesn’t matter. What also seems not to matter is the side of the door that he ends up on. The other day,  it was getting late- around 5 so the bedrooms were dark, Wrigglebot decided to go to our bedroom while I was running the bath and shut the door. I came out looking for him and all I hear is a scared whimpering. He had got himself cornered it our pitch black bedroom and could find no escape. I did rescue him and all was good.

It got me thinking about when he might begin to understand the concept of consequences. I think in relation to some things he does know already, for example he knows that when he stands up in the bath that means that bath time is over and when he touches the TV or stereo he will get a little smack on his hand. I know that I need to protect Wrigglebot from injury and yet at the same time he needs to find out, somehow, that if he crawls off the bed he will fall onto the ground. Do I let him fall so that he will see what will happen? He may get hurt, I certainly don’t want that and yet I won’t be around all the time to catch him every time he climbs on top of something. It seems like a fine balancing act and I just don’t know what the best way of protecting and educating Wrigglebot is. It is my dilemma of the moment.
