A Long Night.

June 13, 2007

It all started so innocently, Wrigglebot went to sleep at his normal time in his normal way. Then along came nine o’clock and Wrigglebot woke and would not be settled, I rocked him for an hour then put him back to bed. I must say, as background, that his top two teeth are coming through at the moment. I didn’t expect trouble though because his bottom two came through without even a whimper.

So we were now at ten o’clock and he seemed to be sleeping but alas fifteen minutes later he erupts into fits of hysterical crying again. It is now that we made a cardinal error. I was tired, I was cold, I was ready for bed; so I said, ‘Husband, if he doesn’t settle soon just bring him into our bed and he can fall asleep next to me until you come to bed.’ It seemed like a good idea, Wrigglebot however finds many interesting things in our bed like bedside tables and pillows and my hair and eyes and eyebrows and eyelashes and pretty much anything that he can pull. So he was entertained rather than trying to sleep while I was trying to restrain him and limit distractions.

Eventually we both fell asleep, Husband came to bed and Wrigglebot woke up screaming, we got him settled again (in our bed) and tried to sleep. I had about ten inches of bed with a ten kilo baby squashing my arm causing pins and needles all down my arm and I was too scared of waking him to move, needless to say I didn’t get much sleep. Two hours later he woke up and started screaming again, then he stopped and perfected all of his ways of annoying mummy when she is trying to sleep, pulling hair etc. It was now that I began seriously considering getting a full helmet like a motorbike helmet and wearing it to bed just to protect my face. Eventually it was a decent time to give him a feed so I fed him at about 5:20 then put him in his own bed and got an hours comfortable sleep before he began screaming again. We finally went for the panadol, probably something we should have done earlier but we were just using the bonjela. The panadol didn’t seem to do much anyway, although when his Yia Yia came to pick him up he was all smiles and you couldn’t have guessed the night he had had so maybe it did do something.

Husband and I had a bit of an evaluation session of our rough night and came to some conclusions for next time; give panadol earlier on, get a heater to take the chill of his room, but most importantly never never never will we put him in our room before seven o’clock in the morning. It would be better for all of our sakes to rub his back for two hours in his own cot than to succumb to putting the Wrigglebot in our bed.
